History found at School

Sunday April 16th, 2006 was not an unusual day here in
Oregon. The forecast was for some rain followed by
showers. Typical for this time of year.
I got the itch as most detectorists’ do that have been
cooped up in the house due to Mother Nature. I figured
that I could get a few school playgrounds hunted in just
a short amount of time.
I was getting real lucky as the showers were only
showing up as I was driving from place to place. I was
just stepping into the fourth playground and had just
missed the sleet when the sky opened up. Unwilling to be
defeated, I just moved faster and was doing a pretty
poor job of covering the area. The rain stopped as I was
almost done and so I decided to go back over what I had
rushed through about twenty minutes earlier.
As I moved near a second set of swings I got a signal
that rang so clear and yet I was still not going to dig
it because this area had been detected to death. After a
few steps I turned back and pinpointed the target. At a
depth of five inches I dug what appeared to be a metal
disc about the size of a half dollar but heavier. I got
frustrated at the thought of it being just another piece
of junk and was about to throw it into my garbage pouch
when I noticed some lettering under the crusty edge. I
decided that it deserved a little cleaning and
evaluating and headed home.
I soaked the item in olive oil for a week and every
couple days would take it out and run a vibrating
toothbrush over it. By the end of the week the words
became clear. The item was a King Louis the XVI (16)
coin from 1793.
If you look him up you will find out that this French
ruler was married to Queen Marie-Antoinette and “lost
his head” in 1793 the same way his wife did with a
guillotine.
The coin is bronze and isn’t worth much but was a very
strange find in this area. One of the best things about
finding something is learning something about it and
both you and I now learned something. I wish I could say
it’s worth a lot but about $4.00US isn’t really fair for
something 213 years old but it is still a piece of
history that I will cherish.
